Truly Flavored Vodka: Everything You Need To Know
Meet Luke

Luke has a preference for Rye whiskeys but has tasted over 250 different whiskeys to date varying from bourbons to scotches. He continues to expand upon his whiskey knowledge by tasting dozens of bottles monthly and reviewing them here on Barrel and Brew as he pursues his Masters of Whiskey certification.
While whiskey is our drink of choice here at Barrel and Brew, we’re not ashamed of drinking the fruity stuff from time to time. After reviewing Pink Whitney, we decided to keep the train rolling and check out Truly Flavored Vodka. Truly is known for being one the first to capitalize on the hard seltzer market, coming in 2nd to only White Claw in terms of sales since 2016. However, very recently they’ve expanded with the launch of Truly Flavored Vodka.
In this article, our primary objective is to determine if Truly Vodka is good and the best ways to drink it. We’ll also touch a bit on the company, the price, alcohol content, and more. If you want to learn about any of these things, just keep on reading.
Truly Company History
The Boston Beer Company released Truly in 2016, and they saw large success as the hard seltzer market exploded. White Claw was seen as the first big player in the hard seltzer or spiked seltzer game with Truly following just behind. Neither of these brands were the first to introduce spiked seltzers, but they were the two most popular to do it. The Boston Beer Company also owns Angry Orchid Hard Cider and Twisted Tea.
In the first quarter of 2022, Truly announced it was going to launch Truly Flavored Vodka. Over the last couple years, everyone – and I mean EVERYONE – began producing their own version of the hard seltzer. Corona, Bud Light, High Noon, Vizzy, Natural Light, and so many others hopped on the train. The market became a little over-saturated, so Truly decided to go the flavored vodka route – another market that is experiencing growth.
Truly Flavored Vodka Overview
- Spirit: Flavored Vodka, Strawberry Lemonade, Pineapple Mango, Wild Berry
- Owned By: Boston Beer Company
- Distilled By: Suntory Beam
- ABV: 30%, 60 proof
- Price: $18
There are a couple of things to note here. First, is that Truly Vodka is produced in partnership with Beam Suntory. Beam Suntory is a alcohol and spirits conglomerate that includes whiskeys such as Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, and Knob Creek. The vodkas they produce include Effen and Pinnacle, however, there are many many other brands under their umbrella. Truly is not included as one of their brands as they do not own it. They simply distill the vodka.
Similar to Pink Whitney, Truly Flavored Vodka comes in at 30% ABV. This gives it some versatility as it’s not as strong as most vodkas, but it’s stronger than most liqueurs. This brings into question, what is the best way to drink Truly Flavored Vodka? We’ll answer that shortly.
A 750ml bottle of Truly Vodka costs just around $18. While it’s certainly not expensive, I think it’s more than it should be. Tito’s Vodka is cheaper than that, more popular, and has more alcohol.
Is Truly Flavored Vodka Good?
Truly Vodka has three flavors right now, each of which is based upon the best selling hard seltzers they offer. I have the Truly Wild Berry Vodka, so I will only offer my opinion on that specific flavor.
Truly Wild Berry doesn’t have an overtly alcoholic flavor to it. This doesn’t come as much of a surprise at the 60 proof mark, though. The fruity, berry flavor is decent, but it is quite strong.
While it’s not bad, the fruity flavors are very tart and sour. It’s not like Green Apple Smirnoff or other similar vodkas that have a fruity undertone. This is designed to be fruity and it is. That being said, I want to reiterate that it’s not bad tasting.
Best Ways to Drink Truly Flavored Vodka
At 60 proof, there is a variety of ways to drink Truly Vodka. It’s lower ABV than your typical vodka, so you typically don’t need to overdue the mixer. It’s also very fruity, so you don’t need to worry too much about finding the right fruit juice either.
1. SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS
Starting with my favorite way to drink Truly Vodka, we are talking shots. This isn’t my favorite way because I love shots of it, though. When you’re being pressured to take a shot or if you lose a bet or game and have to take a shot, a 30% ABV fruity shot of Truly Vodka can really save the day. This isn’t even my shot of choice, but when you don’t want to take a shot but “have to”, this is nice to have around.
2. Club Soda, San Pellegrino, Sprite
Any one of these options work. Even though San Pellegrino comes in fruity flavors and Sprite is lemon-lime, none of these are overly fruity or sour. Carbonation is also your friend to mute some of the tart, sour notes of Truly Flavored Vodka.
3. Red Bull
Red Bull is a classic and almost always good option to mix with vodka. You might have a bit of a sugar overload, but if you’re looking to party and stay up late, Red Bull and Truly Vodka make for a solid combination. You also don’t need much Red Bull to dilute the alcohol and freshen up the taste.
4. Lemonade
I don’t imagine lemonade is the best mixer for their Strawberry Lemonade or Pineapple Mango options, but it’s not bad with Wild Berry. Again, you don’t need to add much lemonade here, so a touch will do. This isn’t my favorite option, though. Truly Flavored Vodka is already so sweet and fruity, I prefer to add a mixer with lighter flavor.
5. Mix with Truly Hard Seltzer
Okay, so you don’t want to spend your night sipping on a 5% seltzer, but you’re not trying to take a whole bunch of shots either. Add a shot or two of Truly Vodka to a Truly Seltzer and sip on something a little closer to 12.5% ABV. Mix and match flavors as you wish or keep it the same!
Truly Flavored Vodka Summary
Truly Vodka is one of the newest releases in the flavored vodka market and is following Pink Whitney in that they offer it at 30% alcohol by volume. The flavored vodka scene, especially that of 60 proof, is highly geared towards younger people. It’s something you drink in college, or most likely before that. Regardless, there are some good things about it.
At 30% ABV and a fruity flavor, you don’t really even need to mix Truly Flavored Vodka to enjoy it. You can simply add ice. Personally, I like Truly Vodka to add to a hard seltzer or as a shot at a party. I can certainly see why younger people would like this, though. It’s certainly something I would’ve drunken when I was in high school or college. Not to promote underage drinking or anything, though….
